The conviction of Naufer Maulavi and fourteen others in the Easter Sunday attacks case is a solemn reminder that going too far, especially in the name of religion, does not end in honour. It ends in accountability.
Islam does not teach excess. It teaches balance.
Allah says:
And thus We have made you a justly balanced community (ummatan wasatan)…”
(Qur’an 2:143)
And He warns those who cross the limits:
O People of the Scripture, do not exceed the limits in your religion beyond the truth…”
(Qur’an 5:77)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Beware of extremism (ghuluw) in religion, for those who came before you were destroyed by extremism in religion.”
Killing the innocent is not jihad. It is a crime against the faith itself:
…whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land — it is as if he had slain mankind entirely.”
(Qur’an 5:32)
Every soul will face what it earned:
“So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.”
(Qur’an 99:7–8)
Zeal without knowledge, anger without justice, and preaching without mercy produce only ruin, for the individual, the family, and the wider community that must then live with the pain and the suspicion that follow.
True Islam is wasatiyyah: the middle path of mercy, justice, and restraint. Anything beyond that is not piety. It is a path that, as this verdict shows, leads directly to its own consequences.
May Allah protect our communities from those who distort the Deen, grant justice to every innocent victim, and keep us firmly on the straight path. Ameen!
